The aerospace industry is arguably one of the most innovative sectors in the world and has witnessed incredible growth since commercial flying became commonplace in the second half of the 20th century.
There is no denying that Covid-19 has transformed the short-term landscape of aviation. However, air transportation still contributes to a large proportion of the global economy. Over 1,400 new air routes are scheduled to operate in 2021 more than double those added in 2016 with regional airports set to be the main beneficiaries according to IATA.
Fly Lankan, third international airline in Sri Lanka is currently negotiating with Airbus and Boeing who are having a duopoly in the large jet airliner market since the 1990s to purchase it›s first six aircrafts including three cargo aircrafts and three passenger aircraft as its initial fleet. Fly Lankan has already purchased its first Cargo aircraft, a Boeing 737 from Kenya recently.
“We will commence cargo operations soon servicing the emerging short term and long term cargo requirements in the region using Sri Lanka as the hub. This is a market segment with huge potential and there was a huge demand in the market, which has further increased in the post Covid new normal conditions. This will followed by passenger air transport too,” said CEO of Fly Lankan, Dr. Arosha Fernando.At a meeting between Airbus and Fly Lankan officials at the head office of Fly Lankan Airline in Colombo recently, the Director for South Asia of Airbus, Frederic Relmy-Madinska said that Fly Lankan has a destructive business model and he believes in Fly Lankan›s plan as the way they are planning step by step is a secured way of business. “Definitely you have a good focus and very much happy to work with you as a strategic partner to build up and expand your business.” (Sunday Observer)
