Sri Lanka has sent short-term and long-term goals to revive the billion-dollar tourism industry, amidst an unprecedented economic crisis, Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando told a foreign broadcaster yesterday (08).
In an interview with CNN, the minister said that the short-term goal is to attract tourists from neighbouring India, as well as Bangladesh.
He further said that the long-term plan is to attract tourists from European countries during the winter season.
“Over the last 3 months, tourism has picked up in Sri Lanka. Several airlines have resumed operations and flight frequencies are being increased. Tourism is a key industry that needs to perform at this juncture in Sri Lanka,” Minister Fernando explained.
Stating that even though Sri Lanka is in a mess, he pointed out that it is slightly better than the rest of the countries, as Sri Lanka has a very good product to sell that caters to everyone.
