World Wildlife Day 2025, celebrated on March 3rd, embraced the theme “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet.” As part of the global movement to protect biodiversity, Aitken Spence Travels reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation with a significant initiative at Horton Plains National Park partnering with the Department of Wildlife Conservation Sri Lanka.

Recent reports indicate a notable increase in leopard sightings at Horton Plains. Given that this is one of the few national parks in Sri Lanka where visitors can explore designated trails on foot, it is essential to educate guests on appropriate behavior in case of an encounter with these magnificent creatures. Recognizing that public awareness is a cornerstone of conservation and coexistence, Aitken Spence Travels marked a new milestone under its “Green Paws” initiative, an ongoing project dedicated to leopard conservation and human-leopard conflict mitigation in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

To enhance visitor safety and promote responsible wildlife interactions, awareness initiatives are being carried out along the Horton Plains Nature Trail. By implementing these awareness measures, Aitken Spence Travels continues to champion sustainable tourism practices, ensuring both the safety of visitors and the protection of Sri Lanka’s leopards. This initiative reinforces the company’s dedication to fostering harmony between humans and wildlife while preserving the natural heritage of Horton Plains National Park for future generations.
