Colombo, Feb 14 (Daily Mirror) – Minister of Sports Sunil Kumar Gamage appointed the new National Sports Council today (14).
Former Sri Lankan rugby captain Priyantha Ekanayake has been named chairman of the Council.
The Council is tasked with advising the Minister on the development and regulation of sports in Sri Lanka.
Other members appointed to the National Sports Council include:
Samantha Nanayakkara – Professor of Sports Studies at the University of Colombo and Sri Lanka’s first female Professor in Sports Studies. She is also a former university-level basketball player.
Rukman Wekadapola – An advisor to the International Boxing Association and a sports referee, also serving as an external lecturer and sports instructor.
Sidath Wettimuny – A former cricketer who played as an opening batsman for Sri Lanka in Test and One-Day International cricket from 1982 to 1987.
Chanaka Jayamaha – A Supreme Court lawyer and a non-executive independent director at Colombo Dockyard PLC.
Rohan Abeykoon – A former Sri Lanka rugby player and past Chairman of the National Rugby Selection Committee, who captained the Sri Lanka Rugby 7s team.
Niroshan Wijekoon – A former badminton player who represented Sri Lanka at the Olympics, winning multiple national badminton titles from 1983 to 1992, and served as the National Selection Committee Chairman and National Coach.
Murad Ismail – Associated with various sports associations including Sri Lanka Table Tennis, a former Golf Selection Committee member, and past Secretary of the Table Tennis Association.
Roshan Mahanama – A former Sri Lanka cricketer and key member of the 1996 World Cup-winning team. He was also the first person to officiate a day-night Test match and served on the National Cricket Selection Committee and Technical Advisory Committee.
C. Ratnamudali – A lecturer at the University of Moratuwa, involved in university-level sports and former member of the National Volleyball Association.
Sriyani Kulawansa – An Olympic athlete who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the Asian Games, participating in over 70 international competitions between 1989 and 2004. She holds the South Asian Games hurdles record.
Malik J. Fernando – Co-Chairman of Dilmah Private Company.
Shanitha Fernando – A former rugby player who represented CR & FC for over 12 years, captained the team in 1994, and played for the national rugby team from 1994 to 1998. He also served as Vice President of CR & FC.
